Single Release | Jesus Hollywood
Jesus Hollywood is the fourth single from David Ward’s cinematic and soulful new album, Violet, Gold + Rose. It marks his first collaboration with London-based award-winning composer, orchestrator and multi-instrumentalist, Phil Meadows.
“This is where it all started. This was the first song I wrote for the album, and was the template for the theme of worship explored throughout,” says Ward.
In 2016 Ward was living and working in London at a pizza shop in Clerkenwell that was fortuitously located across from UK promoters and creators of the London Jazz Festival, Serious. An impromptu invite to his monthly show at the restaurant lead to his first major date in London in a new festival Serious had created focusing on unique artistic collaborations.
“I wanted to do something with strings and a friend of mine, the manager of the piano trio, Phronesis, suggested I collaborate with Phil who had recently started the Engine’s Orchestra.”
The Engine’s Orchestra, dubbed ‘Future jazz gods on the rise’ by TimeOut, unites London’s most adventurous young classical, jazz, world and folk musicians who work closely with other artists to push the boundaries.
“Phil did an amazing job arranging strings for this piece. It helped to seed the orchestral architecture for the rest of the album.”
Ward premiered the piece with a string trio hand-picked by Meadows from the Engine’s Orchestra, at Serious Space Shoreditch festival in 2016. They had the chance to do it again, opening for the legendary Lisa Fischer at the Norfolk and Norwich Arts Festival.
